I love this family to pieces so I was thrilled to photograph them for a Lamoille ranch family session! They wanted something that captured their family at the base of the Ruby Mountains and that also featured their cattle in the background. We made it happen despite the wind!
John and Susan are the proud owners of J.M. Capriola in Elko, Nevada. Their store is recognized for custom saddle-making and it is also the home of Garcia Bits and Spurs. If you need gear for your ranching needs, J.M. Capriola is the place! It is a family owned and operated business for 90 years! Traditions and the importance of family are at the top of their list! Being able to photograph families that hold their traditions close to their hearts is something I cherish!
I wanted to share some of the images from their session that took place on a ranch in Lamoille, Nevada.
I love this view!
One of the things about evening sessions is you run out of sunlight quickly! Sometimes, the most amazing sunset will appear out of nowhere! That’s when the magic happens!
Such a gorgeous couple!
The most important part about having family portraits taken is PRINTING the images! We take pride in creating wall art pieces families can enjoy for years! Check out this wall design that features three family images from this Lamoille ranch family session.
We combined this family session with a styled session for Miss Audrey and her horse. CLICK HERE to see more of her images on our blog.
I had the privilege of photographing Madelyn for her high school senior session at our studio. Madelyn is graduating from Spring Creek High School this week! So exciting!
One of my favorite things about Madelyn is how comfortable and easy-going she is. Spring Sessions are tricky in Northeast Nevada because the weather doesn’t always cooperate. Mother nature tends to be that box of chocolates we remember Forest Gump talking about. We never know what we’ll get! As you can imagine, I was thrilled Madelyn wanted a studio session!
Check out some of my favorite images from this studio senior session:
Madelyn, thank you for choosing Lindsay Syme Photography! You are going to do some amazing things! We wish you the best of luck as you begin your next journey!
Attention pants of high school seniors! Did you know we encourage parents to use this time to update their family portrait? We offer senior sessions with complimentary family sessions! Madelyn is the oldest of four children in her family. Having their family photographed before their family dynamic changes is so important. Here is a peek at a couple of their family portraits:

If asked to photograph a styled session of a precious girl and her horse in Lamoille, Nevada, you say, “Sign me up!” Any portrait session taken at the base of the Ruby Mountains is going to be a winner! I can never get enough of the beauty that exists in this amazing high desert we live in!
The Special Relationship Between a Girl and Her Horse
There is something special about the relationship between a girl and her horse. I got to see that first hand when photographing Miss Audrey and her horse, Bug. Never mind that Audrey was feeling under the weather or the fact that it was cold outside! Never mind that the wind blew all day long! This isn’t anything new. It’s always windy here! You really appreciate the moments when the wind settles because a portrait of a girl and her horse is something that will be treasured for years!
I wanted to share a few of my favorite photographs from this styled session…
I love this next image! So sweet! Shout out to J.M. Capriola, the home of Garcia Bits and Spurs! A heart bit inlay, such as the one in the photograph, can be purchased in the Capriola online store at https://capriolas.com/. After all, a Special horse deserves the best gear!
While photographing images against the mountains, the sun began to set behind us. Capturing images at sunset can sometimes be tricky business. You really need to move fast because when it’s gone, it’s gone!
Such a brilliant sunset! Check it out! Want to see a photographer get excited? Show her an amazing sunset with gorgeous subjects!
What do you do with images from a styled portrait session? You create art! Art for the walls, art for the coffee table, art for the office! In this case, framing a favorite image from the session is perfect!

Who said business headshots need to be boring? One of the things I love most about my job is that I get to work with the most amazing people! I love hearing their stories. It is so rewarding to be able to capture how amazing people are! Being able to create a headshot session for this local firefighter was a FUN project and I can’t wait to share it with you!
Jamey is a local firefighter for our county. He is such a great guy! I know this because he is actually married to one my old high school friends (who was also my co-worker back in my teaching days).
Over the last year, we had casually been chatting about creating some fun business headshots for Jamey. He is a very busy guy when it comes to family, fire season, and even education! He is currently working on his paramedic degree! That is a lot on anyone’s plate! I was super excited to finally get him in our studio.
You have to see some of these images. Being able to watch Jamey as he geared up and talked about his line of work was amazing. I have always been grateful to firefighters because they truly are heroes. They sacrifice so much to be in a career of service. I wanted to share some of the images from his session. These first three matted portraits are my favorite. Actually, I love them all for so many different reasons! Check them out for yourself…
Family Behind the Firefighter
I love these next two images so much! Jamey brought his wife and son to his session. They were sitting off to the side watching him as he put different equipment on. In these next two images, Jamey is looking at his family. We sometimes forget that behind our hometown heroes are families. Their families make sacrifices too. Jamey isn’t just a firefighter. He is a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a friend. Behind every firefighter is a family who loves and supports them. Let’s face it, fire seasons have gotten horrible! Firefighters spend a great deal of time away from their families in efforts to protect and keep us safe. I am so glad I got to photograph Jamey for this session because I also got to capture how he looked at his family! Such a treasure!
These next few images are a little “behind the scenes” action. Jamey and his son share a moment here. Watching them together was a lot of fun. You can really tell his son is proud that his dad is a firefighter. He also couldn’t wait to have a turn trying on a few pieces of gear!
Reaching out for the gloves! Love this!
Big gear for a little fella!
This final image is a montage piece I created to showcase a few of Jamey’s images. It is the perfect piece for any wall! Montages are a great way to utilize several images and blend them into one art piece!

I’ve been lucky to photograph the Walthers family many times over the last handful of years. It has been so much fun to watch their five boys grow! I met them when their third son, Drew, was just a baby! Now he is and 8th grader! Time sure flies! Fast forward several years and it’s time for a new chapter and a new beginning for this beautiful family!
New Chapter, New Beginning
One thing I have always admired about the Walthers family is the fact that they always make time to update their family portraits! This time was extra special. Hunter, the oldest son, recently graduated high school and was gearing up to head to the Philippines for a two year mission for his church. Two years is quite the length of time. This marks a new chapter and a new beginning for this amazing family. It kind of changes their dynamic a bit. Why not capture this special time with an updated portrait? We did just that!
I wanted to share a few of the images from their recent session…
Perfect time to grab a beautiful image of Mom & Dad…
Canvas Wall Portraits
Canvas wall prints are a great way to display your family portraits. They are timeless and traditional. I love hanging wall portraits in places where they can be enjoyed time and time again! Check out this display…
Walthers Family Color Palette
I love how the Walthers Family chose clothing that fits their personality and style! The colors worked so well together! All the credit goes to Melody. In a house full of boys, she always has it together when it comes to the details! Here is a sample of the colors they chose…
Can you believe it’s 2019? I am officially back in the office this week after taking some time off to celebrate the holidays and spend time with my family. I love this time of year because there is so much that lies ahead; so much to look forward to; so many goals to plan and execute! I also love to reflect on the things I did in the previous year. What a great 2018!
Earning my CPP
My biggest and most exciting accomplishment of 2018 was becoming a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) with the Professional Photographers of America. This credential is achieved in two phases. The first, is an exam based on several technical aspects of the photographic craft. The second, is to submit images based on specific criteria that displays knowledge of photographic technique and skill. The goal is to equip photographers with expert skills and technical proficiency that holds them to a higher standard.
Several years ago, I only dreamed of earning my CPP. It was a mere thought in my head. However, I always had an urge to push for it. I wanted to take myself and my skills to the next level. I declared my candidacy at the end of 2016 and took the exam in January of 2017 with a passing score.
After the exam, I moved onto the second phase of submitting 15 images. I managed to procrastinate the second phase for about a year and a half. Yikes! Doubt and fear are not my best qualities! However, I passed the submission on the first try! It felt so good to finally accomplish this big goal I had set for myself.
You Can Hit Your Goals Too!
What a journey! Earning the CPP is not just about passing an exam and an image submission. It’s about all of the steps it takes to get to the standard you want to hold yourself to. It’s about dedication, hard work, and making yourself move forward even when you want to stand still. I am so glad I kept moving forward. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to achieve your goals, as long as you put one foot in front of the other.
I am so excited for this new year! Cheers to 2019! I can’t wait to continue on this journey and work toward my next set of goals. May you push forward and achieve the goals you have set for yourself and never lose sight of the things you want most!

Calling all Elko County homeschool students! It’s portrait time! I bet many of you are getting settled back into your homeschool routines. That means it’s time to update school portraits too! We would LOVE to help you with that! Contact Lindsay Syme Photography to get on the schedule. We will be holding two session days just for homeschool students! Choose either September 18th or 19th. We have a few slots still available. CONTACT US for more details!
Tips to get ready for school portraits:
We always encourage brighter colors. Light colors have a tendency to wash out skin tones. However, the most important thing is that your child is his/herself.
Avoid shirts with logos and slogans so the main focus will be on your child and not the message of their shirt.
Schedule a time that works best for your younger children.
Glasses are okay! Remember, you want your child to be his/herself. We will adjust lighting to avoid glare.
Know which package you would like to purchase ahead of time. Please contact us for details.
We do have a large candy jar in the studio. We will check with you before offering any special treats!
I have a double chin and some curves but I did it anyway! You must be wondering what?As a photographer, I hear it all the time.Women declare how much they want an updated family portrait but want to lose weight first.I am the first to raise my hand because I have been saying that for years!I have a double chin and hate to see it in images.Let’s face it, the pounds pack on for some of us.I’ll even let you in on a little secret.I do update my family portraits but my poor family puts up with me as I race to check the back of my camera to see if I am ok with how I look. The funny thing is, my family never says I look awful. They never point out my double chin. They never tear me apart the way I do to myself. So last summer, my double chin and I joined my family for an updated portrait that was taken by someone other than myself.
Bert Behnke is an amazing photographer from the Chicago area.He is a Master and a Craftsman with the Professional Photographers of America and the founder of PPA Charities. He is recognized for his artistry and his generosity. He is absolutely amazing! We were extremely lucky to have Bert visit us and take our family portrait.I will admit I was nervous because of my own insecurities, but I also trusted Bert.He captured us during the golden hour with our beloved Ruby Mountains in the background. We actually hadn’t seen any of our images until Bert surprised us with the most amazing wall portrait during our studio reveal we won from the PPA Charities Dream Studio Giveaway 2017.You can see more about the reveal on the following Facebook video:
This portrait is gorgeous. It captured us exactly who we were as a family.I love the colors and the texture and the frame.I can’t imagine any other item on our wall that could make me this happy. It hangs on the wall that overlooks our entire living space.I see it when I come down the hall in the morning, I gaze at it while I eat dinner with my family, and I see it when I walk in the front door.I absolutely love it!My kids often tease me because I never get tired of looking at it.I love to walk up to it and take it all in. For me, this isn’t a portrait that gets overlooked on a day-to-day basis.I literally gaze at it and think about the many things it represents. It was taken at one of the most chaotic times in our lives. But no matter how chaotic that time was, my family was the only thing that truly mattered. I also love that the Dream Studio Team created wall art from family images I had taken as well. This wall is very special.
Time really does fly by.I am amazed at the changes that occurred since these portraits were taken. One year may not seem like much time but my kids have grown at rapid rates! In one short year, my son is now taller than me and my daughter is not far behind. The ages my kids were in these portraits marks a special time.It was pre-teen for both of my kids and probably one of my favorite stages in their lives!I will ALWAYS be grateful we had these precious moments created into portraits.
I will never understand why we, as women, knock ourselves so horribly.I won’t try and say that I have stopped beating myself up or that my double chin is my best feature.I will say, having our family portrait created by Bert last summer was something I will always be glad we did.I can’t get that moment in time back, but I can and will always look at our family portrait and remember how truly priceless this item is.I will always be grateful to Bert for giving us this gift!
I want to create that for YOU too! CONTACT LINDSAY SYME PHOTOGRAPHY to update your family portrait. Every session is tailored around your family’s interests, style, and vision for a final product.
I will never get over the fact that time flies right on by! I began photographing the Walthers boys when they were small. Now, the oldest is preparing to graduate high school! That blows my mind! They have grown so much! I wanted to share their recent portrait. We were lucky enough to take an extended family portrait for the entire family so we took the opportunity to update the boys’ portrait as well. Watching these kiddos grow up over the years has been such a joy! A lot happens in seven years!
Walthers Brothers 2011…
One of the things I admire about their mom is her appreciation for photography. She always made time to update their portraits over the years. That can be hard to do with a house full of busy boys! She definitely made it happen. I know she will always treasure the photographs. I am certain she will remember the most recent as her oldest son prepares to graduate and begin a new chapter in his life.
Stay tuned for a blog post on the portraits from the extended family session. In the meantime, look back on some other family portraits from the Walthers family HERE.
